The perfect hair wash routine

If your hair never quite feels the same at home as it does when you leave the salon, it is usually not your products. It is your routine.
This is something we see all the time in salon. The difference between hair that feels flat, dry or hard to manage and hair that feels soft, clean and healthy often comes down to how you are washing it.
So here is exactly how to get it right at home in a way that feels easy, not overwhelming, and actually works.
Start with a proper soak
This sounds simple, but most people rush this step.
Your hair needs to be fully saturated before you even think about shampoo. We are talking at least 30 to 60 seconds of proper soaking, especially if you have thicker hair.
If the hair is not fully wet, your shampoo will not spread properly and you will end up using more product while getting a worse result.
Think of this as the reset. You are prepping the hair to actually be cleaned properly.
Shampoo twice, always
This is one of the biggest game changers.
The first shampoo removes build up like oil, dry shampoo, product and pollution. It might not lather much and that is completely normal.
The second shampoo is where the hair actually gets cleaned.
This is where you will see a proper lather and your scalp will feel fresh.
Focus your shampoo on the scalp, not the mids & ends.
Your ends will be cleaned enough when the shampoo rinses through.
Take your time here. A gentle but thorough scalp massage makes a huge difference not just to cleanliness, but to overall hair health too.
Condition properly, not quickly
Conditioner is not something to rush.
Squeeze excess water out of your hair first, then apply your conditioner through the mid lengths and ends only.
Avoid your scalp unless your stylist has recommended otherwise.
Use your fingers or a wide tooth comb to gently distribute it evenly, then leave it on for a few minutes. This is what gives you that soft, manageable finish rather than that dry tangled feeling.
Be mindful with your rinsing
Rinsing matters more than you think.
Make sure all shampoo and conditioner is completely rinsed out. Leftover product is one of the biggest reasons hair feels heavy or greasy quickly after washing.
If you can, finish with slightly cooler water. This helps smooth the hair and gives a bit more shine.
What most people get wrong
This is where we see the issues in salon, and fixing these alone can completely change your hair.
You are rushing the wash and not rinsing properly.
You are skipping the second shampoo!
You are putting conditioner on the roots and weighing your hair down.
It is not about doing more. It is about doing it properly, and trust us when we say... You will totally feel the results!
The routine that actually works
Keep it simple.
Fully soak your hair, shampoo once to remove build up, shampoo again to properly cleanse. Condition mid lengths and ends and then rinse thoroughly and finish cool if you can.
That is it. No overcomplicating it.
Final note
Healthy, effortless hair does not come from guessing. It comes from having a routine that works for you and sticking to it.
This is exactly why we focus so much on aftercare in salon, because the results you get at home are what keep your hair looking good between appointments.
If your hair still does not feel right even when you are doing everything properly, that is when we look deeper. It might be your product choice, your colour history or your scalp health.
And that is where we come in!
